Harmony + David

Beautiful AirBnB Wedding in the Woods

I don’t know what I love the most about Harmony and David’s wedding. Is it the fact that it was in the middle of the forest, all the pretty little handmade details, or the fact that they cancelled what was about to be a quite traditional wedding to have something that looked more like them? I know there’s a lot of couples that dream of an intimate and personal wedding, but then don’t have it because one parent or relative says it’s “not wedding enough”… Well, I can tell you these two have guts, and if you’re having this kind of dilemma right now, please read their story! Photography by Nick Radford (and don’t miss the honeymoon video this couple made!).

Their wedding took place on August, 17th 2012, at a little Airbnb cottage in Soquel, California, USA. Here’s how they ended up having their wedding there.

David and I were planning our 100 person wedding at some expensive venue when, 3 months before our wedding, we realized it wasn’t what we wanted at all. We were only planning this larger wedding because we felt like we had to so that we wouldn’t offend anyone. What we really wanted was a super small and intimate wedding in an amazing location with our closest friends and family. So we took the plunge. We cancelled our venue and everything we had set up and began our search for the perfect place to have our wedding. While we were looking through some of the amazing houses on Airbnb for our honeymoon we thought, what the heck, why not ask if we can have our wedding there too! We asked around for weeks and weeks and all we received were “no’s”. Then on one glorious night we received our first “yes” from the owner of this tiny little cottage in Soquel, CA. I will admit that it wasn’t my first choice, but once we got there we were blown away by the beauty and character of this place and from that moment on, I couldn’t have imagined our wedding anywhere else!

Name one thing you regret…

The only thing I regret is not having a professional wedding planner for our wedding (or at least a family member to take charge on the day of!). I didn’t think I needed one because our wedding was so small and I thought it would be too difficult since the wedding was taking place 6 hours away. Because of this, I was the only one who really knew our timeline and the order of events, which was pretty stressful on my part. Luckily our wedding was small enough that everyone just went with the flow and everything worked out perfectly.

… And one thing you’re really happy about/ proud of.

We are overjoyed that we were able to go with our gut and plan the wedding of our dreams, instead of the wedding that we thought we had to plan. But honestly, as long as we were married by the end of the day, I was a happy camper! :)

The word of the photographer.

Being that David & Harmony were in the wedding industry, they understood how important timing the day around optimal light was. The way everything was arranged around having a beautiful aesthetic made my job entirely too easy.

Andrea + Dani

Fun Spanish Wedding with a DJ Bride

Every time I see the pictures of this wedding, I feel like listening the one song that really moves me and turn up the sound! I’m also very pleased to make you discover (or rediscover) the work of a great photographer and person – Megan of Bikini Birdie. Here comes Andrea + Dani’s wedding!

Andrea and Dani’s wedding took place on June 9th 2012, at the Buenavista Dénia hotel in Dénia (between Alicante and Valencia in Spain, where Andrea’s parents already got married).

Name one thing you regret…

You’re going to think I’m not telling the truth… but I can’t think of a single thing that I regret. Ok, there is maybe one thing: on the wedding day I woke up at 5 in the morning (I went to sleep at 2!), saw some clouds in the sky and then wasn’t able to sleep anymore. The wedding was meant to take place outside and I was terrified it would rain! Well, guess what? It was great there were clouds because otherwise we would have melted!! But the thing is, I only slept three hours and didn’t look as pretty as I should have! ;)

… And one thing you’re really happy about / proud of.

I knew exactly how our wedding had to be and got to convince my husband to let me take the decisions. The thing is, it turned out to be even more perfect than I could have imagined. My husband feels the same way, though he didn’t even want to have a party at first (now he wants to get married every year)!
One thing I’m really happy about is that everyone felt so relaxed and comfortable; you could really feel that “love was in the air”. I saw my mother and stepmother hugging each other; my father and husband (who had been fighting about the tie of the fiancé for months—Dani didn’t want to wear it and my father thought that this was unforgivable) couldn’t stop crying; and all the guests were dancing as if there were no tomorrow, even the oldest ones!
The next day, a lot of guests told me they had never been to a wedding like that before and didn’t want to go to another one anymore because any other would look boring in comparison… I couldn’t have asked for more.

“fê em Deus, DJ!”

Ladies and Gentlemen… “Here comes the bride!” Y E S !!!! Andrea actually performed a concert during her wedding! Both of them showed up afterwards on stage… I LOVE LOVE LOVE that they appeared wearing hoodies!

Andrea y Dani, sois los mejores, seguid con esa energia toda la vida!

Kirsten + David

Fresh and Fun South African Wedding

Life is short, but hey, wedding is just one day! I love to see beautiful weddings, but I hate it when I don’t see anybody having fun! Today I’m sharing Kirsten and David’s beautiful wedding, to which I’d easily give the credits for the notion of fun wedding if I could. Watch and learn… Photography credit: welovepictures from South Africa.

David was living in San Diego when him and Kirsten first met in South Africa. I was about to shorten their story, but it’s really kind of a long-distance relationship fairytale, so I just let you with Kirsten’s testimonial:

Well we had a crazy meeting… Two years ago David came to South Africa for a surfing trip. On the last night of his stay we met through mutual friends and had an amazing conversation, but for the rest of the night blushed and purposefully ignored eachother. We then a few weeks later contacted eachother on facebook just as friends (him being in San Diego, and me being in Cape Town). This sparked hours of crazy deep and intimate conversations, and him posting me a web cam for the start of many long skype dates.
After a few months he finally asked if he could come out and visit again, and this visit was really something so special and made us both realise that it was something really worth pursuing, even though we felt completely mad and crazy doing it we just couldnt get enough. And especially hard as I was studying and David was working for a non profit (invisible children), so we were both a bit poor to dive into this expensive relationship (San Diego being almost the most furtherest point to fly to from Cape Town). But we just felt that so many doors opened us and felt so supported by our friends, who were so involved in supporting our relationship – and they entered us into competitions and even contributed towards flights to the point were we actually got to see eachother way more than we thought we would.
Which in fact leads me to our proposal where we met up in Ireland so that David could meet my family, with his intent to get their approval and get married asap! He proposed with a beautiful old ring he had found in a park in the hail in Ireland. Afterwards his friends couldnt believe that he managed to get me with a 60 dollar ring and entered him into a competition which he had no clue about. So he ended up winning it, and this diamond company rocked up at his work and asked him it would drop everything for love and flew him to South Africa with a huge diamond ring, so he flew out and proposed again a month later, which was a complete surprise to me!

Their wedding took place at Laq de chamonix, Franshhoek, Cape Town, South Africa.

Name one thing you regret…

Wish I ate more of the food! And wish I hadn’t sobbed down the aisle!

… And one thing you’re really happy about / proud of:

We made sure (almost completely) that we had finished everything we wanted to do before the last week so that we could spend some good time with all our friends, and made it a big celebration. I think that was definately worthwhile doing, as lots of our friends travelled from overseas to come to the wedding, the week long celebration beforehand allowed us to spend lots of time with everybody!

Thanks Kirsten and David, keep this freshness with you all along your life!
