Stephanie + Fire

Trash the Dress with Fire

I don’t know if you remember the trash the dress with paint post I published here a few months ago? I told you it was part of a bigger project and that there was going to be more of this project to enjoy soon… well, here we are! To be honest, I initially contacted the photographer after seeing one of these shots (that are actually all super amazing), begging him to let me blog the whole thing. It turned out, it wasn’t available at that time, but I was able to get to know and blog other works of him in the meanwhile, and also discover the great person that’s behind the great photographer. Today is the day I can finally show you the full series of pictures I initially wanted to. If you’re interested, you can go have a look at the whole project here (and then like me, end up spending hours looking at all the photos that are up on his blog), but, you need to see this trash the dress with fire session here first, as even the photographer didn’t blog it yet! Photography by Don Barrington Photography, currently based in Australia and available worldwide. (Oh, and this goes without saying, but don’t do this at home, ok?)

The word of the photographer.

I first met Stephanie through one of my good friends. The concept was simple, but took a bit of time. Not every bride knows how to fire spin, so first I needed to find a bride who could fire spin. Second I needed her to trash her dress as well. I was in luck. When I talked with Steph she had just  married and wanted to trash her dress in some memorable way. When I told her my idea she could not wait to get started.

The shoot was broken up into two parts: water and fire. This was an accident. The first time we shot a squall of menacing clouds surrounded Newcastle and the waves bombarded the coastline, over and over. I captured a few amazingly big waves with Stephanie in front of them, but it was too wet to light her baton. We tried at another location, and she did manage to light one side, but just for a second. So we tried, again. A month later we were back to the same location, this time at night, with no wind or rain. It was perfect. She got her baton to light up, the mesmerizing spinning, spinning … the fire appeared like dragons, birds, swords, quickly transforming in shapes, forms, and spirits.

Midnight Morning

Trash the Dress with Paint

I’ve seen many trash the dress sessions, and some engagement shoots that included paint, but nothing quite like this series of pictures. The photographs below are part of Don’s Trash The Dress Project, that consists in putting models in various elements and photograph them trashing bridal dresses. I would love to know your thoughts about this; I was personally really moved and I’m so looking forward to seeing the rest of the project! Photography by Don Barrington, that you’ll find in Anchorage Alaska half of the year, and Melbourne Australia the other half.

Those are the very words Don used to describe his work.

This particular series from the Trash the Dress Project is entitled Midnight Morning because the time of the day was midnight and the Alaskan light still visible. The location was in interior Alaska in the downtown part of Fairbanks. The time was nearly midnight. The day was June 24, a few days after the summer solstice, where the light shows nearly all day and night. On this trash the dress session I wanted to use paint as the source of trashing the dress. I have seen many photographs of paint splattered on dresses but none by me. I used a small, abandon alleyway to begin the trashing, mixing greens, yellows, and blues to create mesmerizing shades and tones of colors. After the dress had enough color on it I sent the model to walk around downtown. I picked a few locations and I photographed her with the waning midnight light, until it altogether had dissipated. Then she threw the dress in the trash bin and that was it. The photo shoot was over but the photographs, documenting my first painted trash the dress session, are here.

Anne + Laurent

Trash the Dress Session in the Alps on the Ski Slopes

Anne and Laurent are Jean-Louis’s friends. When they decided to get married in winter, Jean-Louis convinced them to have their wedding at a ski resort. But then, it looked too complicated for all the guests to come. Jean-Louis didn’t give up: in March (when the weather was meant to be a little bit milder) they headed up to Les Gets, in France, and had a decent photo session… on the ski slopes! I guess you all got it, Jean-Louis is the photographer, and his full name is Jean-Louis Brun.

For once, I got the photographer’s memory of that day.

Walking through the village of Les Gets and see all those amazed faces (I mean, Anne was wearing her wedding dress, Laurent his wedding suit, and both of them had ski shoes on) is something I will never forget!

For those wondering, Anne skied with naked shoulders between 4 and 5 pm! Chapeau bas!
