Nicky + Gareth

English Teepee Wedding in Pink

When Nicky and Gareth started discussing the organisation of their wedding, they established 4 rules: it had to be unique, intimate, and above all, fun whilst keeping it local. They ended up choosing to have teepees which happened to be just for them! I really love the festival atmosphere those teepees created as well as all the pink touches that were added. The beautiful pictures were taken by Steve Rooney for Natural Touch Photography, out of England.

The wedding was on August 25, 2013. The ceremony took place at Christ Church – Douglas in Parbold, Parbold Hill, just outside Wigan; the wedding breakfast was on a playing field within the church grounds (a first for the church).

We were so lucky to have perfect weather for our special day, we couldn’t guarantee it wouldn’t rain, be cold or even too hot (this is the UK). The celebrations started off a few days before with a festival type theme as the Tee pees were erected, with family and friends helping to fill them with home built and borrowed furniture, a fire pit with a massive bowl of marshmallows then finished off with homemade decorations of pom poms and mix and match cushions.

The Vicar, Simon was really interactive and shared a few embarrassing stories we shared with him which gave a light mood to the service. We had a good friend Skype in from Sydney, Australia to give a reading on the big screen which it was very emotional.  We showed videos and a slide show of pictures of our family & friends which tickled many of the congregation whilst we signed the register. We compiled the Church slideshow music ourselves which came from The Piano Guys & the wedding march was Hans Zimmer – Your So Cool from the film ‘True Romance’ which was just so us – not traditional but just lovely.

The speeches were a highlight and Gareth’s favourite bit of the day, my dad did a great job, followed by Gareth. I had to have my say too which I found quite daunting and worried I would cry, I managed to hold it together… just. The best man’s speech from Gareth’s brother was fab, after a funny start of ‘oh I’ve lost my speech actually no I really have lost it!’ it was all concluded with advice from Gareth’s 8 year old nephew Ollie, – ‘Don’t tell Nicky your real age’ tears and laughter were definitely experienced by all.

Name one thing you regret…

I don’t think there is anything we regret about the wedding but if you ask Gareth he thinks we did too much fussing over small things and wished he wore an orange waistcoat he was contemplating. But I was so pleased about the whole day. I think the small things added to the feel of the day & every one picked up on different things.

… And one thing you’re really happy about/ proud of.

We are so happy how the whole day went, we organised everything ourselves and it was really important that we got exactly what we wanted for the day. It meant that there was a lot of effort required before hand, including making our own cushions for people to sit on with different materials, making pom poms for decorations, up cycling jars with rope & ribbon for tea lights and hydrangea flowers from friends and families gardens, to building frames to put our table plan in & making order of services that doubled up as fans in case it was hot, home-made desserts from family & friends and not to mention the home made bar which lead to several arguments on who was taking it home at the end of the weekend! We used the Church field & Scout Hut as our venue so people only had to walk down a tree lined track after the ceremony. We had games for the children and for the adults including giant Jenga, skittles and badminton and only had our closest friends and family present.

The first dance caused somewhat of a stir. After having had ballroom and Latin dance lessons for over a year and a half, we wanted to impress our friends with the skills we had acquired. We hadn’t shared with many people how interested we had become in dancing. We kicked it off with a slow side step to The Lumineers – Ho Hey, which quickly progressed to a Latin Rumba, my favourite moment was the slow long dip mid-way through the song. I got a glimpse of everyone shouting and clapping and was one of the greatest moments of the day…after saying ‘I do’ of course!

The word of the photographer.

From a photographer’s point of view this wedding was an absolute gem. The weather was great for a start and the reception was in a tepee! But what stood out much more than this was the relationship between Nicky and Gareth and their family and friends. It’s always a joy to photograph a wedding full of emotion and it was so easy to get caught up in the occasion and feel genuinely happy for a lovely couple. It’s this connection with a wedding that I’m always looking for as a photographer. Sometimes it takes a lot of work. Other times, like with this wedding, it happens without much effort at all.

Leslie + Fred

Creative Wedding in France, a Trandom and a Bunch of Happy Friends

When there’s two ceremonies (eg. civil & religious/ secular), I always choose to show one only, to maintain a good consistency and make it easier for the reader to understand what’s happening. Today however, sorry but I couldn’t get rid of one single moment of their day; it looks like the newly weds thought about everything to make it extra special! They wanted a creative wedding, where everybody could enjoy themselves, they wanted people to gather for a joyful moment.. and I think they pretty much nailed this! Also, I encourage you to read the story of how they met, maybe my preferred one so far. Photography by Céline Hamelin (YES the same Céline who’s offering a free couple session in New York, it’s still time to participate!).

The wedding took place on July 24th, at the Domaine de Tih in Loubieng (in front of the mountains of the Pyrenees). I absolutely love their story (these guys met the actual Cupidon!!).
It was the very beginning of Spring 2005… Both of us, still strangers one for another, were celebrating the end of the exam time. A few glasses of rosé, some wanderings and a bit of luck later, there we were, in the same night club.
Just an ordinary story, until Cupidon had some fun with us… that night, he took the shape of a 40 year-old, with glittering eyes and an unsteady gait. The guy grabbed my harm, kindly took me to a group of girls and called one of them: “I-dont-know-who, let me introduce you to I-dont-know-who!”. He then laughed out loud and left our lives forever, though he never knew he actually changed them forever.
First eye contact. First time we see each other. Then came our first smile, our first laugh and first laughter. Our first words exchanged… and our first kiss!… So yes, we had the chance to meet Cupidon that night and all we know is he hadn’t been taking it quite easy on mead!!!

Name one thing you regret…

Nothing we deeply regret, besides the dessert buffet maybe… We let a dedicated confectioner handle it, but didn’t really check whether the caterer knew exactly what he had to do with it. As a result, the dessert table was prepared by the caterer without the confectioner being there, and it didn’t really matched our expectations in terms of presentation.

… And one thing you’re really happy about/ proud of.

Our invites, designed and created by us two and more generally, all the little paper details we did ourselves; the save the date video that we made (thanks to our friends for the camerawork); the unforgettable bachelor & bachelorette party; on the D day, the outdoor ceremony—under the old oaks, listening to the musics that made our story, the triplet, bubbles, some friends playing for us, the wind, and us two faintly exchanging our vows in front of a moved audience…—until now, the most beautiful 30 minutes of our lives! We’re also really happy about the implication of our friends, everybody enjoyed what we had prepared, which created a great atmosphere during the whole week-end.

The word of the photographer.

I knew from the beginning on that we would get on well together. Fred is voluble and a lot of fun, Leslie’s always smiling and caring. Two people that are really great together, with tons of ideas in their heads and tons of travels in their photo albums (the first night, we were talking Island and NYC for an hour drinking wine!), and a lot of “handy” energy! They spent nights and weekends of the past year inventing everything, creating, printing, sharing, antiquing… We got to know each other better during a fantastic photo shoot on an Eiffel bridge with their favorite objects… We had a lot of fun during their bachelor and bachelorette party where I was invited to by their friends… which ended up in a wonderful shoot on the beach… And then the D day, bucolic and fresh, lots of emotions, attentions and surprises for their guests. Authenticity, originality & happiness! What else?…

Rita + Vasco

Delicate Wedding in Portugal

Pink wedding shoes, sweet tables, personal touches and a breathtaking venue: I love Rita and Diogo’s delicate wedding in Portugal! Photography by Pedro Vilela.

The wedding took place June 1st, 2013, at the Quinta de São Thiago, in Sitra, Portugal. From the groom:
Our day started nervously, in the expectation of what was going to happen. It was simply magic, our relatives and friends arriving, the staff staring with its tips and tricks, and all along this timeless day, congratulations, smile and laughter, emotions and memories of bygone days… The entrance of the bride, fast as the opening of a flower, letting out its sparkles, perfume, color and happiness, totally contagious! A flirt in simplicity, to represent a quick moment of union, that symbolically marked the Day, the Before and the After in the calendar of our lives… The glamor of an afternoon between friends, the Sun, the blanket in the grass, the blue of the sky, the green of the surroundings and this contagious happiness, pure energy… When the night fell, the fireflies lightened up the wedding cake, a masterpiece of pastry that we shared and enjoyed together! There still was some magic in our feet, that made us dance until exhaustion. One day, it was the Day, full of details, small contingencies, unique and historical moments of our life.

Name one thing you regret…

It only lasted 12 hours, close to 720 minutes, 43200 little seconds… Time goes on and went on so brutally, as only time can do, so we can say that the one thing we regret is to have had such little time!

The families that created us, the friends that were there for us, from the moment we were born to wherever life’s taking us.
