Jil + Jul

Super Fun French Wedding in Brittany

I’m so happy to share with you the wonderful and fun wedding of Jil and Jul. This wedding has it all: some really fun newly weds and guests, a beautiful decoration (I LOVE the contrast of the multicolor flowers with those white tables), entertainment, and the key ingredient – some really stunning pictures! Photography by Benjamin Le Du out of France.

The wedding took place on August 22, 2014 in Brittany, France (Querrien and Pont Aven to be precise).

We’ve been together for 11 years and Julien proposed to me during a trip to the Rodrigues Island we made last year to celebrate our 10 years together. We started the day with some snorkeling in a turquoise water; the skipper stopped us on a little desert island called the cat Island. We were walking around when Julien made his proposal: He took a photo of us two, but had previously placed the engagement ring beside my neck; then when I looked at what the picture had given I saw it! I say Yes, of course. We were both shaking like a leaf… It was perfect!

Name one thing you regret…

The bride: That I didn’t serve the oignon soup!… long story. Do not hesitate to delegate, but take some time before the wedding to organize everything and be able to give every piece of information needed. This helps a lot on the D day (and the D-1 day).

The groom: That I didn’t dance a lot. I spent a lot of time outside with the non-dancers. We had a very intimate wedding, we could afford to spend some time with each and everyone of our guests, but still, we can’t be everywhere at the same time, and it’s normal.

And one thing that makes you happy or proud.

We aren’t very organised people, and planning this wedding was a challenge. We are very proud we did all the decoration ourselves, the aperitive, the bouqet, the favours, the invitations and save the date. We also worked the whole year on the playlists – no DJ but a computer and 2 good speakers!
Second, our surprise dance at the city hall!!
But one thing’s for sure, if we were to do it again, we wouldn’t change a thing!

Bernadette + Egbert

Burlesque Wedding in a Theatre in the Netherlands

Today’s wedding is huge. Bernadette and Egbert got married in a theatre in their hometown Zwolle in the Netherlands, right on the stage where normally big productions like operas, musicals and ballet performances take place. After the bride’s entrance, the celebrant was drawn by lot and ended up being the bride’s brother. What happened next was just a unique sequence of sketches, acts and piano shows, to which the guests could participate. The result? Check it yourself: one of the most eccentric weddings I’ve ever seen, full of laughter and fun for everyone! The beautiful pictures of this burlesque wedding were taken by Nicole Bosch out of the Netherlands.

The wedding took place on October 3rd, 2013, at the Theatre De Spiegel in Zwolle, the Netherlands.

We wanted a special wedding. We wanted a party for everyone. An experience, an event, a wedding you’ll never forget and that our guests would remember for a long time. Soon we knew we wanted entertainment in many forms , and when the idea came to get married in the theatre, everything fell into place.

When we saw the pictures, we experienced the day all over again. The atmosphere, the butterflies in the stomach and above all the love that we got that day from our family and friends were perfectly captured. The pictures show so many happy and cheerful faces. And that was exactly what we wanted. That not only we had un unforgettable day, but also our family and friends.

Name one thing you regret…

I was almost too late for the wedding ceremony. When preparing the veil, the coordinator entered the dressing room and told that Egbert was already on stage. The image of a running bride, my father, and four little bridesmaids through the corridors of the theatre really stayed with me. And even though I just had a moment of stress at that time, now I ‘m smiling back.

… And one thing you’re really happy about/ proud of.

In fact there’s too many to mention!

  • – Dress and prepare in front of our parents and good friends.
  • – Seeing each other when entering the theatre.
  • – My father giving me away;
  • – Be married by your brother;
  • – Singing father and niece

The word of the photographer.

Every wedding is special to document, but sometimes you have a wedding that is extra special for the photographer.  The wedding of Egbert, Bernadette and their son Rembrandt was one of those.

Theater De Spiegel is one of the most beautiful theatres in the Netherlands, both before and behind the scenes. The beautiful lobby, the artists dressing rooms and the grandeur of the stage with its beautiful lighting, gives a photographer unprecedented opportunities. It was great to capture a wedding in such an impressive backdrop.

With leading roles for Egbert and Bernadette, a theatre worthy program was staged. The ceremony was a great show. The celebrant, brother of the bride, was ‘chosen’ by drawing of lottery balls, and the wedding vows where very personal and full of love.

After the ceremony, the guests were allowed to enter the stage and they became part of the cast. Acts with acrobats, burlesque dancers and a spectacular piano show. The entire party was an impressive performance!

Leslie + Fred

Creative Wedding in France, a Trandom and a Bunch of Happy Friends

When there’s two ceremonies (eg. civil & religious/ secular), I always choose to show one only, to maintain a good consistency and make it easier for the reader to understand what’s happening. Today however, sorry but I couldn’t get rid of one single moment of their day; it looks like the newly weds thought about everything to make it extra special! They wanted a creative wedding, where everybody could enjoy themselves, they wanted people to gather for a joyful moment.. and I think they pretty much nailed this! Also, I encourage you to read the story of how they met, maybe my preferred one so far. Photography by Céline Hamelin (YES the same Céline who’s offering a free couple session in New York, it’s still time to participate!).

The wedding took place on July 24th, at the Domaine de Tih in Loubieng (in front of the mountains of the Pyrenees). I absolutely love their story (these guys met the actual Cupidon!!).
It was the very beginning of Spring 2005… Both of us, still strangers one for another, were celebrating the end of the exam time. A few glasses of rosé, some wanderings and a bit of luck later, there we were, in the same night club.
Just an ordinary story, until Cupidon had some fun with us… that night, he took the shape of a 40 year-old, with glittering eyes and an unsteady gait. The guy grabbed my harm, kindly took me to a group of girls and called one of them: “I-dont-know-who, let me introduce you to I-dont-know-who!”. He then laughed out loud and left our lives forever, though he never knew he actually changed them forever.
First eye contact. First time we see each other. Then came our first smile, our first laugh and first laughter. Our first words exchanged… and our first kiss!… So yes, we had the chance to meet Cupidon that night and all we know is he hadn’t been taking it quite easy on mead!!!

Name one thing you regret…

Nothing we deeply regret, besides the dessert buffet maybe… We let a dedicated confectioner handle it, but didn’t really check whether the caterer knew exactly what he had to do with it. As a result, the dessert table was prepared by the caterer without the confectioner being there, and it didn’t really matched our expectations in terms of presentation.

… And one thing you’re really happy about/ proud of.

Our invites, designed and created by us two and more generally, all the little paper details we did ourselves; the save the date video that we made (thanks to our friends for the camerawork); the unforgettable bachelor & bachelorette party; on the D day, the outdoor ceremony—under the old oaks, listening to the musics that made our story, the triplet, bubbles, some friends playing for us, the wind, and us two faintly exchanging our vows in front of a moved audience…—until now, the most beautiful 30 minutes of our lives! We’re also really happy about the implication of our friends, everybody enjoyed what we had prepared, which created a great atmosphere during the whole week-end.

The word of the photographer.

I knew from the beginning on that we would get on well together. Fred is voluble and a lot of fun, Leslie’s always smiling and caring. Two people that are really great together, with tons of ideas in their heads and tons of travels in their photo albums (the first night, we were talking Island and NYC for an hour drinking wine!), and a lot of “handy” energy! They spent nights and weekends of the past year inventing everything, creating, printing, sharing, antiquing… We got to know each other better during a fantastic photo shoot on an Eiffel bridge with their favorite objects… We had a lot of fun during their bachelor and bachelorette party where I was invited to by their friends… which ended up in a wonderful shoot on the beach… And then the D day, bucolic and fresh, lots of emotions, attentions and surprises for their guests. Authenticity, originality & happiness! What else?…
