Naomi + Damian

An Intimate Dutch-Australian Wedding in France With Only 28 Guests!

Naomi and Damian had a very intimate wedding in France of only 28 guests, with family members & friends coming from The Netherlands and Australia. I love how simple they kept things (the groom made the cake on the wedding day and though it’s his “one thing I regret”, I still think it’s super awesome), and how fun they seem to have had – who said “party in a jacuzzi”? Photos by Ricardo Vieira.

Naomi’s family lives in the Netherlands, Damian’s family is from Australia. And these guys got married in France! The exact place the wedding took place at is called Villegailhenc; it’s a little village about a 10 minute drive from Carcassonne. They booked two locations, one for the cocktail and party (La Maison), and another one with more rooms for their families to stay for the night (Le Moulin). “In the end this was such a lucky shot!” says the bride, “because the owner of Le Moulin (Hellen) offered to be our wedding celebrant.” Here’s the story of how this couple met (and got engaged).

Damian and I met during a blind date actually in Amsterdam. An old colleague of mine asked me if I wanted to have a date with someone she knew. I was up for a fun night and thought: why not!!
He texted me first to ask if I was interested in going on a date with him and also called to ask me out.
He was very old fashioned about it, which made me very curious to say the least. We had a date on Friday night in a great African restaurant, on Sunday we met up again for a beach walk (in Noordwijk where I live) and have been dating since than..
He really kept being old fashioned ever since. He asked my dad if he could have my hand in marriage, up to two times !

Name one thing you regret…

Naomi – I regret that I felt so responsible and stressed most of the time, which wasn’t necessary at all!
We had the best group of guests and each and everyone helped with decorations, flowers, food and drinks. It came together so perfect!
Damian – I regret it a bit that on our wedding day itself, I was in the kitchen making our own wedding cake with my brother. That day felt like it had a stressfull  beginning, which didn’t allow me to soak in all the great things that were happening and enjoying every bit of it.

… And one thing you’re really happy about/ proud of.

Damian and I both agree that we are so happy and thankful for our family and friends. They made our day such a special and unforgettable day. We had a small group of 28 people. It felt very intimate. And because everyone in this small group helped out, it came together perfectly. Even though a lot of people didn’t know each other yet, we had such great nights of drinking, eating and dancing together. Unforgettable.

Damian – I am very proud of how Naomi was able to organize our entire wedding (from finding the venue, checking it out beforehand, arranging flight tickets, rental cars for his family, etc). Without Naomi the day wouldn’t have been this great.

Naomi – I am very proud of us two, standing in front of the people we love. Telling each other how much we love each other. And making the day how we pictured our wedding would be.

DIY Aussie Rock’n Roll Themed Wedding

I love it when you guys are getting serious about organizing your wedding! Almost everything at this super amazing rock’n roll themed wedding was DIYed. Both families were deeply involved, not to mention their close friends (apparently, everybody had a defined role), and everybody did a damn good job! So, sorry, you will not find a vendor behind the amazing wedding cake they had, nor will you get a chance to buy the same dress or headpiece the bride was wearing. But don’t be frustrated, because you still get to see these photos and feel a bit like their guest today. Photography by Lakshal Perera – it’s always a pleasure!

The wedding took place on August 4, 2013 at Chateau Wyuna, Mt Evelyn, VIC, Australia. Here’s about this 100% perfect DIY wedding.

We were married at Chateau Wyuna in the Yarra Valley at 3pm! Such an amazing day and so great to share it with 140 of our family and friends :) It was so lovely how much everyone helped us with our wedding! We had such an amazing time and it was our happiest day ever! We both love music so much so I walked down the aisle to a String Trio playing Metallica – Nothing Else Matters, our bridal party entrance song was Mindsnare – Bulldozed, our first dance was Time Of My Life (Dirty Dancing), I threw the bouquet to NOFX – Linoleum, Coops took my garter off to Miles Away – Anywhere, our farewell song was Luca Brasi – Isaaac Bowen. Some Band To Write Home About played songs by Pennywise, Blue Line Medic, Millencolin, The Ataris, Gaslight Anthem, The Bouncing Souls, The Descendents and No Use For A Name.

Regarding the wedding, name one thing you regret…

We bought a birthday cake for our friends who were having birthdays on the day of the wedding but I accidentally left it in the fridge at home! We still got to sing happy birthday though so that was good!

The word of the photographer.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a couple walk in to their reception to a song by Mindsnare. And to be honest, I doubt I ever will again. The love that Scott and Tammy have for music is amazing; they don’t just love it, they LIVE it. And by live it, I mean they run and produce all the content for an amazing website called Chucking a Mosh. I must admit, I don’t like every artist they have featured on there (I’m getting a bit old for music that loud) but I really respect the time, effort and energy they put into it – every industry needs people who do things for other people simply because they love it. And this is a summary of these two people. Their passion and love and drive makes the world a better place, and the fact they’re committing the rest of their lives to each other is a pretty damn cool thing.

Trash the Dress with Fire

I don’t know if you remember the trash the dress with paint post I published here a few months ago? I told you it was part of a bigger project and that there was going to be more of this project to enjoy soon… well, here we are! To be honest, I initially contacted the photographer after seeing one of these shots (that are actually all super amazing), begging him to let me blog the whole thing. It turned out, it wasn’t available at that time, but I was able to get to know and blog other works of him in the meanwhile, and also discover the great person that’s behind the great photographer. Today is the day I can finally show you the full series of pictures I initially wanted to. If you’re interested, you can go have a look at the whole project here (and then like me, end up spending hours looking at all the photos that are up on his blog), but, you need to see this trash the dress with fire session here first, as even the photographer didn’t blog it yet! Photography by Don Barrington Photography, currently based in Australia and available worldwide. (Oh, and this goes without saying, but don’t do this at home, ok?)

The word of the photographer.

I first met Stephanie through one of my good friends. The concept was simple, but took a bit of time. Not every bride knows how to fire spin, so first I needed to find a bride who could fire spin. Second I needed her to trash her dress as well. I was in luck. When I talked with Steph she had just  married and wanted to trash her dress in some memorable way. When I told her my idea she could not wait to get started.

The shoot was broken up into two parts: water and fire. This was an accident. The first time we shot a squall of menacing clouds surrounded Newcastle and the waves bombarded the coastline, over and over. I captured a few amazingly big waves with Stephanie in front of them, but it was too wet to light her baton. We tried at another location, and she did manage to light one side, but just for a second. So we tried, again. A month later we were back to the same location, this time at night, with no wind or rain. It was perfect. She got her baton to light up, the mesmerizing spinning, spinning … the fire appeared like dragons, birds, swords, quickly transforming in shapes, forms, and spirits.
